Dear Expectant Parent(s),
For us, it all started in 2009 with boneless wings, Pittsburgh pizza, and a Steelers Super Bowl Victory.
A year later we were engaged, married shortly after, and 6 years later our love continues to grow stronger each day. Our names are Matt and Diane and we want to acknowledge how difficult a decision this must be for you. We hope and pray that you will find peace and comfort as you travel down this difficult path. We are grateful that you are taking the time to read our letter and get to know us more and why it is we hope to include children in our family.
As stated above, we have been married for 6 years, after a year of waiting; we decided to begin our journey to parenthood. However, that journey has been filled with several obstacles and adversity. After many infertility procedures/treatments with disappointing results, including a miscarriage, we have been led to adoption. We hope to someday be able to provide a child with all the love we have in our hearts and provide a warm and caring family that will allow that child to grow and experience all that life has to offer.
We would both describe ourselves as being kind, caring, understanding, passionate, and active individuals. Both of us were born in Pittsburgh and spent the majority of our lives in the area. Family plays an important role in our lives. We both have been blessed with loving and supportive families. Matt grew up with his mom, dad, twin sisters, and half-sister. Some of his fondest memories from childhood are attending sporting events, traveling on vacations, and participating in several athletic activities. Diane grew up with her mom, dad, and older sister. Some of her fondest memories from childhood are going on vacations with her mom, grandma, and sister, being part of the church youth group and going on retreats, and spending Tuesdays in the summer with her grandma. Our families are aware of the struggle we have had trying to build our family and have always supported us. They are excited that we are on the journey to adoption and are happy that this may be the opportunity for us to build our family like we have always wanted.
We are both educators who enjoy the opportunity to work with children of all backgrounds and abilities and to help them grow and develop in a positive way. Diane is a middle school Family and Consumer Sciences teacher. She also is the Student Council Advisor, Cooking Club Sponsor, and one of the advisors of the high school Fashion Club. Matt is a high school Social Studies teacher and is also involved in the athletic program coaching football, basketball, and track at the 7th and 8th grade level. We are both fortunate to wake up every day loving what we do and working to make a difference in our communities.
As far as hobbies go, one of Diane’s favorite things to do is bake and decorate cake/cupcakes. She loves watching tutorials online, learning new techniques, and trying them out (Matt does not complain)! Baking is not only fun, but also a great stress reliever. Diane is excited for the day when she has a little baking assistant in the kitchen with her. Another thing that Diane likes to do is attend Civic Light Opera shows with her mom downtown. They start with a great dinner and then enjoy the show! She also loves hanging out with friends and having an impromptu game night! As for Matt, he lives a very active lifestyle. He enjoys running, exercising, and other activities that promote physical and mental health and well-being. He also enjoys spending time with friends, attending sporting events, and giving back to the community.
Although we are not parents yet, having friends who have started families and also being teachers that interact with children on a daily basis, we are aware of the challenges and obstacles that come with raising a child. We know that we possess the skills and knowledge necessary to provide a loving and stable environment for a child. We believe that one of the most important components of child-rearing is modeling appropriate behavior. For example, being kind and respectful to others is a characteristic that would definitely want to bestow upon our children. As for discipline, we believe it is important to be fair but firm. It’s important for children to learn and grow from their mistakes, and understand that certain actions have consequences. Discipline in our household would be carried out in a positive and productive way.
We feel it’s important to encourage our child to grow both mentally and physically. We want them to learn to think for themselves and encourage them to be creative, expressive, and curious. We want them to explore all types of activities from music to art to literature. Additionally, we want to teach them to have an active and healthy lifestyle, and learn the importance of goal setting, teamwork, and working hard to overcome adversity and accomplish goals. Finally, allowing them to share meaningful family experiences such as holiday traditions and vacations, as well as opening them up to different cultures and communities is very important.
We understand the importance of a child knowing who they are and where they came from. We would welcome the opportunity to maintain a connection and build relationship with you. We understand that we are all in this together and your role in the process and child’s life will always be impactful and meaningful. We hope that this letter has provided you with a glimpse of who we are and what we have to offer.
Thank you again for taking the time to get to know us.
